Barakah 4 completes hot functional tests
Hot functional testing of the fourth and final unit at the Barakah nuclear power plant in the UAE has been completed, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation announced. The Korean-designed APR-1400 reactor is scheduled to start operating next year.

Kakrapar 3 to begin commercial operation this year, minister says
Unit 3 of the Kakrapar nuclear power plant in India's Gujarat state is expected to enter commercial operation by December 2022, atomic energy minister Jitendra Singh said in a written reply to a question in the Indian Parliament's lower house, the Lok Sabha. The reactor is the country's first indigenously-designed 700 MWe pressurised heavy water reactor.

TAE Technologies secures funds to build next fusion machine
Fusion energy company TAE Technologies has received investments to fund the construction of its sixth-generation research reactor that it says will demonstrate the viability of net energy from TAE's approach. The announcement came as TAE's fifth-generation reactor, Norman, has sustained stable plasma at more than 75 million degrees Celsius, 250% higher than its original goal.

Construction of Egypt's first nuclear power plant under way
The first safety-related concrete has been poured for the nuclear island of unit 1 of the El Dabaa nuclear power plant in Egypt. It marks the official start of construction of the first of four Russian-supplied VVER-1200 reactors at the site on the country's Mediterranean coast.

The application for the construction of Sizewell C power plant in Suffolk, in the east of England, has been granted development consent by the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Kwasi Kwarteng.

Kairos and Materion commission molten salt purification plant
The plant, designed by Kairos Power and based at the Materion campus in Elmore, Ohio in the USA, will produce high-purity fluoride salt coolant to be used in high-temperature molten salt reactors.

Shin Hanul 1 in test operation
Unit 1 of the Shin Hanul nuclear power plant entered test operation on 15 July, South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced. The unit - the first of four APR-1400 reactors at the site - is scheduled to enter commercial operation in September.

The Environment Agency has launched a four-week public consultation on NNB Generation Company Limited's decision to store used nuclear fuel at the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant under construction in Somerset, England, in a dry storage facility rather than a wet facility as originally planned.

Construction starts on third Haiyang unit
The first safety-related concrete has been poured for the nuclear island of unit 3 at the Haiyang nuclear power plant, the Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute has announced. It marks the official start of construction of the first of two CAP1000 pressurised water reactors planned as Phase II of the site in China's Shandong province.
