IAEA/RCA Regional Training Course (RTC) on “Application of Nuclear Techniques to Studies of Bioaccumulation and Contaminant Analysis for the Development of Emergency Response Strategies for Aquatic Environment” will be held in Bangkok, Thailand in 5-16 September 2005.

The main objective of this course is to improve the regional capacity for the management of aquatic radiological and environmental risks. The course also intends to develop capacity in the RCA countries in assessing, planning, and responding to such pollution in aquatic environments.

The major growth of industrial activities in RCA Member States has increased the potential for radiological and environmental contamination of receiving waters. Accordingly the accumulation of contaminants in the water, flora, and fauna can give harmful impact on the health of local communities, their food supplies and local economy. In these circumstances, this regional training course was established with the support of Australian extrabudgetary funding in order to provide appropriate training programmes to the RCA Member Countries.

During the training course, the following subjects will be covered; behavior of contaminants in aquatic systems, practical experience in the application of nuclear techniques for evaluating bioaccumulation and environmental fate of contaminants in aquatic systems, and an introduction of ecological risk assessment.
