A kick-off meeting for the RCA-UNDP Post-Tsunami Environment Impact Assessment Project, which has been initiated by RCARO as part of its RCA partnership promotion programme, will be held in 22-25 August 2006 at Century Hotel in Jakarta with the local support by BATAN (Indonesian National Nuclear Energy Agency).
The 3-year RCA-UNDP project (2006-2008) will assess the environmental impact of the tsunami, that affected many RCA Member States in the region in December 2004, by using advanced nuclear analytical technologies that have distinctive advantages in analyzing the environmental contamination. The assessment project aims at contributing to national environment policy when making necessary measures for environmental consequences from huge natural disasters such as the tsunami.
At the Jakarta meeting, the major stakeholders of the project will confirm and develop implementation plans in accordance with the established work plans for 2006 and beyond. The meeting also endeavors interaction with the local end-users in order to input their views on the expeced outcomes from the project. In this regard, related local end-users will be invited by BATAN to the meeting. At present, representatives from State Ministry for Environment, Agency for Assessment and Application Technology, Agency for Marine and Fisheries Research, Research Center for Oceanography (Indonesian Institute of Sciences), and National Development Planning Agency will particiapte in the RCA-UNDP Post-tsunami Project Meeting.
All of them are being actively involved in the national post-tsunami project for rehabilitation and resconstruction of Aceh where the 2006 Decemer tsunami severely hit. It is considered that such involvement by the end-users in this project will be a demonstration to positively interact with national end-users by the RCA-UNDP project participating countries.
The RCA-UNDP project was concluded in late June this year among RCARO and the donors (UNDP and Korean Ministry of Science and Technology). The total budget for the 3-year project will be approximately USD300,000.
