In order to enhance synergic collaboration between RCA and FNCA (Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia), detail discussion was made between the FNCA National Coordinator of Japan (Dr. Sueo Machi) and the Director of RCARO on 12 March 2007 at RCARO office.
Dr Sueo Machi, former Atomic Energy Commission of Japan and currently an Advisor to the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) visited RCARO to discuss detailed implementation plan in the areas of radiation processing for adding values of natural polymers and radiation therapy of cancer which were initially proposed by FNCA side.
RCA and FNCA have been implementing radiation processing and radiotherapy projects at their ends and there was a need to collaborate together for effective synergic outcomes. Radiation processing of natural polymers is regarded as one of the very promising technology to produce new materials for medical, cosmetic, agricultural and environmental uses. Radiation therapy technology for frequent cancers in Asia, in particular the uterine cervix cancer, has been an impending issue of most countries in the region. However, very proper therapy techniques are pre-requisites for better treatment of cancer patients and combination with chemo-therapy has been recognized as a very effective method.
The two regional nuclear cooperative frameworks, while carrying out similar projects, commonly felt the need to collaborate each other for the benefit of the region. In this regard, FNCA proposed collaboration in the above-mentioned areas as a touchstone endeavor.
