Dr Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan has recently been appointed as the new Chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC). Before named as the Chairman of BAEC, Dr S I Bhuiyan was the Member of BAEC for physical science.

Dr S I Bhuiyan is also the National Project Coordinator (NPC) for RCA-UNDP Post-Tsunami Environment Impact Assessment Project representing Bangladesh. The former BAEC Chairman, Dr Choudhury S Karim became an Adviser to the Government of People's Republic of Bangladesh (minister level) with portfolios in agriculture, forestry and environment, and fisheries and livestocks.
