On 12 April 2007, the Government of Malaysia has notified that the renaming of the Malaysian Institute for Nuclear Technology Research (MINT) was officially concluded as the Malaysian Nuclear Agency (or Nuclear Malaysia) in short. This change has been made as part of the country's endeavors to further promoting the peaceful applications of nuclear energy for socio-economic development, and to reflect its role in promoting the peaceful uses of atomic energy.

Since its establishment, MINT has changed its name a couple of times in order to contributing to the nation's socio-economic development with its full capacity and potential. MINT was established in 1972 as the Tun Iismail Atomic Research Center (PUSPATI). PUSPATI was later renamed as the Nuclear Energy Unit (UTN) in 1983 on being placed under the auspices of the Prime Minister's Department. In 1990, UTN was retransferred to the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment, and assumed its new identity as MINT in 1994. After 10 more years of great progress, MINT was renamed as Malaysian Nuclear Agency. Even though the recent decision to rename the organization was made in 2005, the legal process for the renaming has recently been concluded. The functions of the organization, including those in relation to the IAEA, nevertheless, remain unchanged.
