With a view to promoting the RCA awareness and partnership, RCA participated in the East Asian Seas (EAS) Congress 2009 held with the theme, “Partnerships at Work: Local Implementation and Good Practices,” on 23-27 November 2009 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila, Philippines. Convened by the GEF/UNDP/IMO Regional Programme on Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA), this five-day event provided a region-wide platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, capacity building, strategic action and cooperation for the sustainable development of the seas of East Asia.

A total of three RCA experts, Mr Ross Jeffree, Mr Ron Szymczak and Ms Elvira Sombrito, gave presentations and shared ideas with audiences at their designated session under the titles of “The Role of the IAEA/MEL in Supporting Regional Seafood Safety,” “Discharges to the Marine Environment from Nuclear Activities in the Asia-Pacific Region-the Rapid Emergence of Nuclear Power,” and “The RCA/UNDP Regional Project for Post-tsunami Environment Impact Assessment using Nuclear and Isotopic Techniques,” respectively.

Three representatives of RCARO also participated in the Congress by setting up an exhibition booth to publicize RCA by handing out RCA brochures and success stories to about 400 visitors and by providing additional information on the displayed RCA posters. At an arranged meeting during the Congress, Mr Mun-Ki Lee, Dir-RCARO, met with Mr Raphael P.M. Lotilla, Executive Director, PEMSEA, to discuss ways on seeking cooperative partnership through designation of a relevant expert of each side, and they were of the same view on the appropriateness of such cooperative follow-up method.
