RCA Thematic Sector Lead Country Coordinators (LCCs) met at IAEA Headquarters during 26-30 July 2004 and prioritized 2005-06 cycles projects that have been proposed by the Member States.
The RCA Thematic Sectors/Project are focused on the application of nuclear techniques in agriculture, human health, industry and the environment. Other thematic sectors/project are energy planning, utilization of research reactor, radiation protection, and electronic networking and outreach that aims at better RCA information flow. The RCA Thematic Sector LCCs took sincere consideration on the global effort to achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) when they prioritized the projects. At the meeting, RCARO representative made a presentation on the potential partnerships with world development communities.
In an effort to increase RCA ownership by the Member States, from several years ago, the IAEA has greatly encouraged the upstream project planning by the Member States. In this regard, Member States have concentrated their project proposals on seven thematic sectors. They are (1) Agriculture (2) Human Health (3) Industry (4) Environment (5) Energy Planning (6) Research Reactor Utilization, and (7) Radiation Protection. Member States designated Lead Countries for each Thematic Sector who would profoundly consider the IAEA Technical Co-operation (TC) strategies when planning the project proposals. The IAEA TC strategies greatly underline to generate socio-economic benefit to the region that would bring out from implementing the IAEA funded projects, to demonstrate distinctive advantages of nuclear technologies compared to other conventional technologies so that the nuclear applications can stand with viability, and to display future visions and missions.
At the meeting, LCCs have sincerely considered the global trends in sustainable development and expressed their great interest in achieving the MDGs through RCA endeavors. In line with the trends, WEHAB (Water, Energy, Health, Agriculture and Biodiversity) which are the action plans of the Millennium Development Goals have sincerely been considered when making prioritization of the next cycles project proposals.
