As leading producers and exporters of several important food and agricultural commodities, RCA Member States are facing ever increasing sanitary and phytosanitary requirement of food and agricultural goods from international communities. IAEA has supported Member States with food irradiation technology to fulfill Member States’ requests during the past several years. Irradiation is considered as a unique technique in the control of food borne pathogens in some food, especially of animal origin, and as fumigant for disinfestations of agricultural products. As the project reaches to its end, achievements of the project as well as recommendations for future strategies and activities for the implementation of the technology at a national level will be discussed at a final review meeting to be held in Daejeon, Korea in 21-15 March 2005.
The final review meeting will not only review and evaluate achievements of the project and lessons learned from its implementation but also discuss ways to enhance regional cooperation for the development and transfer of this technology to the end users. It is expected that accomplishment of the project and collection of success stories from the application of irradiation technology for sanitary and/or phytosanitary purpose of food at national or international market will further increase awareness of the food irradiation in our daily lives.
