2022 RCA-KAIST Master’s Degree Course

1.Overview |
The RCA-KAIST Master’s Degree Program of the Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering (NQE), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) is designed to educate and train high-caliber students from the Regional Cooperative Agreement (RCA) Member States with the aim to preserve and enhance nuclear technology for RCA Member States. The graduates of the program have been contributing to the developments of nuclear and radiation technology for their countries by working in government supported R&D institutions, or government-funded enterprises, universities etc. as elite leaders.
This program has been implemented since March 2003 and 42 students in total from 11 countries have been accepted up to now. To finish the course, it takes up to 2 years regularly and students must satisfy certain requirements.

2.RCA Scholarship |
ㆍRCA-KAIST program scholarship coverage is as follows; |

Application fee (80,000 Korean Won -> see “How to apply”) |

2 years Tuition (Approx. 8,200,000 Korean Won per academic year) |
- |
Stipend (1,000,000 Korean Won/month): to be paid monthly on 25th of each month for up to 23 months depending on the study period.

- |
The economy-class one-way airfare from the nearest airport of the originating country to Incheon, Korea. |
|
|

- |
If students take this program in their own country via an online platform, the above stipend may be applied to the different guidelines. |
- |
If a student decides to withdraw from the program of study after he/she was offered admission, he/she must return the full amount of the scholarship (including application fee) received up to the time of withdrawal. |
- |
Withdrawal due to objective reasons (illness or natural disasters, etc.) shall be excluded from the return of scholarships. |
- |
The local transportation from the airport to Daejeon, and the returning airfare after finishing the course is not covered by the program. |

ㆍInformation about KAIST |
|
- |
On-campus housing (dormitory) can be arranged but the cost must be borne individually. At present, a 2-beds standard room at KAIST costs about 800,000 Korean Won/6 months (slightly different depend on each dormitory) and must be paid before the beginning of each semester. |
- |
KAIST offers a family apartment for married students, which is located off campus. In order to apply for this apartment, you have to apply by visiting the website after signing in KAIST Portal system: https://nkds.kaist.ac.kr/. Please understand that you may not be able to apply due to high competition. You can move into an apartment after your admission date. Private housings with comparatively high price are also available near campus, but KAIST is not responsible for the lease and contract of these housings. |

The meals in the Campus cafeteria cost around 4,500 Korean Won per meal.

National Health Insurance fee (mandatory) of approximately 50,000 Korean Won/month and KAIST student health insurance fee (optional) of 40,000 won/semester should be paid by students. |

3.Qualification for Application |

must have graduated from a 4-year academic institution (or equivalent by the time) and have BA (Bachelor of Arts) or equivalent degree. |

4.Application Documents |

- Application forms can be downloaded from the KAIST admission website. (https://admission.kaist.ac.kr/intl-graduate/). Applicants are recommended to frequently visit the KAIST admission website for being informed of further notices or your application status.

Two Letters of Recommendation from two professors of the educational institute where the applicant attended for BA or MS degree. Applicants who are working can also get recommendation letters from their supervisors. Letters will be received electrically by KAIST recommendation system. |

Recommendation of RCA national representative of applicant’s country (free-form): The copy of representative’s letter should be sent to Ms. Juyeong Park at juyeong@kaist.ac.kr by the deadline of online application. Optional 1: Regular TOEFL (or TOEIC, TEPS, IELTS) score record more than below score will be highly evaluated (for students only from non-English speaking countries). The test taken more than 2 years prior to application due date may not be accepted.

All documents must be official and original. The offer of admission may be revoked if a candidate's submitted documents are found to be false and counterfeit. Also faxes and photocopies are not considered as the valid application documents. However, photocopies of transcript with new fresh valid stamp are considered as original.

For degree and transcript, certified copy with apostille certificate (or Korean embassy certificate) is preferred, as it will expedite your achievement of visa after admission notice.

All documents should be written in English officially so if application documents including academic transcript are written in a language other than English, they should be translated into English with the authorization of a public notary in your country. |

5. How to apply |

All applicants must apply online from August 26, 2021 ~ September 23, 2021, through https://apply.kaist.ac.kr/intergradapply. After finishing online application, the application ID and password must be informed to Program coordinator (juyeong@kaist.ac.kr) so that admission fee can be paid by RCA program. Payment will be made only if recommendation letter from RCA NR is received.

Payment made by applicant without consulting with the coordinator is non-refundable. |

Online application form should be printed and enclosed in the application package. |

Applicants should send their application package directly to Graduate Admissions Team at KAIST, and application package should be arrived by the due date given below. For detailed information including address, please refer to the KAIST admission website (https://admission.kaist.ac.kr/intl-graduate/). The Graduate Admissions Team shall only accept application documents that arrive at KAIST by due dates. They do not take any responsibility for a failure in delivery of application documents by the deadline.

6. Admission Procedure and Coming to KAIST |
ㆍScreening at Department: November, 2021 |
|
- |
The Departmental Student Selection Committee (which includes the Program professor) at the Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering, KAIST will review all the applications submitted to the Admission Management Team of KAIST. Then, qualified applicants will be recommended to the Student Selection Committee of KAIST. If the number of qualified applicants is larger than the maximum number of students that the RCA-KAIST Master’s Degree Program can accept, some of applications can be transferred into the KAIST scholarship program. |

ㆍAdmission Evaluation: November, 2021 |

- |
Applications recommended by the Departmental Student Selection Committee will be evaluated by the KAIST Student Selection Committee. |
|
ㆍAdmission Notification: December 17, 2021 |
|
- |
Admissions results will be posted on the KAIST admission website (http://admission.kaist.ac.kr) along with registration instructions. The program coordinator also will contact admitted applicants for further instructions by e-mail. |

ㆍVISA and Air Ticket Process: January ~ February, 2022 |

The admitted students should get his/her Visa from Korea Consulate in his/her countries. KAIST International Office (IO) will give you guidance for Visa issuance, |

Economy-class one-way ticket under 800 USD from originating country to Incheon international airport will be provided. Program coordinator will contact you for this information when the admission result is announced.

ㆍArrival at KAIST: February 23 ~ 25, 2022 |
|
- |
The dormitory for new students in the spring semester of 2022 will open from February 23, 2022. Therefore, it is recommended that the new students enter the KAIST dormitory no later than February 25, 2022. |
- |
If self-quarantine is required, you must enter into Korea two weeks earlier and complete self- quarantine, in which case you must pay the full cost of self- quarantine. From July 1, 2021, self- quarantine will be exempted from entering Korea after 2 weeks of full vaccination. For more information on self- quarantine exemption, please contact the Korean Embassy in each country for the most accurate information. |

Report your arrival to the Program Coordinator, Ms. Juyeong Park by visiting Room 6101 of N21 building for further instruction on RCA-KAIST Program. |

Students are encouraged to meet many professors of interests and should determine his/her academic advisor with the agreement of the professor he/she chose and then his/her studying desk will be assigned in the academic advisor’s laboratory.

Students should bring 3 passport-size photographs in order to make a photo ID and other necessary official documents without delay. |
◇ |
Students are advised to bring warm clothes for the cold season, November to March, as well as some money (~ 1,500,000 Korean Won) for the initial set-up. |

The minimum credit unit per semester is 9 and the maximum is 12. |

Students must satisfy the department and KAIST requirements for their graduation (You can refer to the NQE department website at http://nuclear.kaist.ac.kr). |

7. Requirements for Graduation |
There are two options for MS degree track: |
ㆍThesis-based MS degree |
|
- |
For graduation, students must obtain at least 33 credit units consisting of (1) 7 courses (7x3 = 21 units) with the average GPA score of 2.5 or higher and (2) a thesis research (12 units) for 2 years. If your BS major was not nuclear engineering, NQE502 “Principles and Applications of Nuclear Engineering” or NQE503 “Radiation Science, Technology, and Applications” is mandatory to attend. The minimum credit plan for graduation is as follows;

ㆍCourse-based MS degree |

This is an option to finish MS program without thesis research (12 units) but with 2 more courses (6 units) + and Independent Research (6 units). The student is supposed to finish MS degree within 3 semesters. For this option, however, students must consult with his/her academic advisor during the first or second semester.
