Possible linkages between air pollution, poverty and health in Asia will first be investigated by the Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities (CAI-Asia), with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). (Source: CAI-Asia).

Studies on the subject in the US, Europe and Lain America suggest that economic deprivation increases the magnitude of air pollution-related morbidity and mortality. However, no similar study has yet been conducted in Asia and understanding on this subject is quite limited.

In early December 2005, ADB approved a technical project entitled 'Air Pollution, Poverty and Health Effects in Ho Chi Minh City'(APPH). Under this project, a case study will be conducted in Ho Chi Minh City in Viet Nam to develop a conceptual framework of the scientific, social and economic linkages among urban air pollution, income, and health. This is the first time such a study will be done, and the project aims to develop a methodology that other Asian cities can apply. The total technical assistance grant is $950,000 which is cofinanced by ADB, Health Effects Institute (HEI) and the Government of Viet Nam. ADB will enter into a partnership agreement with HEI for implementing the project.

It is noted that RCA is now carrying out air pollution projects using nuclear techniques for improved management of transboundary air pollution in the Asia and the Pacific region.
